‘Massey saved my life’: Meet alum – and cancer survivor – Melissa Weaver
VCU School of Social Work alum Melissa Weaver (B.S.W.’99; M.S.W.’06) is supporting the institution that helped save her life.

The Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center provided treatment when Weaver was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2013. She tells Richmond TV station WTVR that she underwent a double mastectomy, 16 chemotherapy treatments and 35 radiation sessions.
“The care I have received at Massey provided hope when I could not rise from bed,” Weaver tells the RIchmond Free Press. “They gave me compassion when shame and loneliness filled the corners of my life and purpose when I could not find my way after cancer. … The Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center saved my life.”
She’s giving back – and sharing her story – as the volunteer chair of the center’s 30th Annual Women and Wellness Luncheon on Feb. 4.
“Being a part of Women and Wellness has provided a way to use my voice to inspire others to continue to connect, educate, and advocate,” Weaver says in the Free Press.
