Virginia Commonwealth University School of Social Work alumnae Marcia P. Harrigan, Ph.D. and Anne Kisor, Ph.D., have recently established a  new scholarship to support social work students.

The Fostering Success Scholarship Fund is being developed to financially assist students who have demonstrated an understanding of the foster care system and shown a commitment to pursuing a social work career relating to positive youth development.

“It is important to support our current students because they are our future colleagues,” says Kisor.

Since 1917, the VCU School of Social Work has prepared students to bring about change through their knowledge and action. With an internationally recognized faculty dedicated to scholarship and teaching, the school offers a unique combination of classroom and field experiences, emphasizing critical thinking, self-awareness, evidence-based decision-making and ethical integrity.

In an effort to extend the opportunities we afford to our students, this new fund will provide partial scholarship on a competitive basis to B.S.W. or M.S.W. applicants with a commitment to social work and positive youth development.

Like all B.S.W. and M.S.W. graduates from VCU, recipients will be prepared to practice in diverse settings such as child welfare, mental health, teenage-pregnancy prevention, substance abuse, domestic violence, policy and human services administration.

Marcia P. Harrigan, Ph.D., retired senior associate dean of VCU School of Social Work and emerita faculty, provided the university with 31 years of service before retiring in 2010. As emerita faculty, Harrigan regularly works with the    current administration and tutors students in Great Expectations, an initiative of the Virginia Foundation for Community College Education.

Anne Kisor, Ph.D., is the assistant dean for administration and finance at VCU School of Social Work. Prior to her time at the university, Kisor was the director of Louisa County Department of Social Services and the deputy director of the City of Richmond Department of Social Services.
