School of Social Work

No. 28 M.S.W. Program in the U.S.

On Saturday, April 5, 2014, the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Social Work participated in the university wide Preview day. Preview day is an event for students accepted to VCU to visit campus and preview what their college experience could be like.

This year, the School of Social Work included a hands on social work service project in their Preview day events. After a short presentation given by Safe Harbor, prospective students worked with school faculty, staff and current students to make encouragement cards to go in welcome baskets for women and children entering Safe Harbor’s domestic violence shelter.

“We really wanted to provide prospective students and their families insight into how they as social workers will directly impact the lives of their clients and community. They put an amazing amount of thought and heart into the cards they created and it was inspiring to get a glimpse into their individual aspirations to help others,” said Kim Flournoy DiJoseph, Director of Student Success.

From day one, each School of Social Work student not only is taught how to be a social worker, but they are given the tools necessary to make a real community impact.
