NHPerkins

Perkins, a Ph.D. candidate in the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Social Work, holds an M.S.W. from VCU’s School of Social Work with a concentration in mental health and an M.S. in Human Development and Family Science from The Ohio State University. His training at the formerly named OSU Marriage and Family Therapy Clinic, coupled with his practice in Virginia counseling individuals experiencing severe mental illness led to his interest and research in the area of physical and emotional sibling violence. His dissertation, “Parental Perceptions and Experiences of Physical and Emotional Violence Between Siblings: A Mixed-methods, Comparative Case Study,” focuses on including parental voice in the research on sibling violence with the hope of leading to changes in practice, policy, education and intervention research. Perkins’ research experiences at VCU and OSU have allowed him the opportunity to engage in numerous projects that have strengthened his capacity for conducting research. His teaching philosophy emphasizes dedication to helping students think critically to achieve their potential to be highly effective social workers and scholars. Aside from his experience teaching at OSU, Perkins has taught in the B.S.W. and M.S.W. programs at VCU. He currently teaches as an adjunct instructor in the M.S.W. program at Loyola University Chicago.
