Remembering True Farr Luck
I am deeply saddened by the passing of a great friend and believer in the boundless potential of the people that make up VCU, VCU Health, and the Richmond community.
An advocate for humanity and a perfect citizen, True Farr Luck served the community and spoke of the importance of working with all people to help them realize their full potential and worth.
True’s philanthropy in support of VCU and VCU Health’s programs spoke to her unwavering confidence in VCU. Within the physical structures and environments she helped construct, we are better able to learn, educate, create, heal and research—all at a level that is both world-class and local.
As a patient and later as an advisory board member at Massey Cancer Center, True took a deeply personal experience and created opportunity. The Harrigan, Haw and Luck Families Chair made it possible to recruit a respected researcher dedicated to cancer treatment and research. Today, we are working tirelessly to develop treatments and cures for cancer that will improve the quality of life for all humanity.
And, recently her support of VCU Institute for Contemporary Art further elevated Richmond’s reputation as a place that welcomes art that sparks thought, provokes conversation and instills change. The pinnacle of the ICA bears her name and is a wonderful place to contemplate, observe and be inspired.
The wise counsel and generosity of True and her husband Charles make it possible for faculty, researchers and students at VCU Rice Rivers Center and VCU School of Business to educate, discover and collaborate to make a difference now and in the future.
In 2016 I had the honor of presenting True and her husband, Charles, with one of VCU’s highest honors, the Edward A. Wayne Medal, for their longtime generosity and service to the community. Their dedication to research, education and discovery will positively impact generations to come.
I am forever grateful for True’s friendship, kindness and great sense of humor. I will miss her and am sending heartfelt condolences to True and Charles’s beloved family and friends for the loss of a truly remarkable human being.
