President’s Posts

Michael Rao, Ph.D.

Dear Colleagues:

The State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV) has issued its annual call for nominations for the 2021 Virginia Outstanding Faculty Awards program.  Created in 1986 by the General Assembly, the Outstanding Faculty Awards are the Commonwealth’s highest honor for faculty members at Virginia’s colleges and universities.  These awards recognize superior accomplishments in teaching, research and service.  Scholarship of SERVICE should contain clear and compelling evidence related to: the application of knowledge and expertise in the broader contexts of (i) institution; (ii) community/society; and (iii) professional service.  The Rising Star award is intended to acknowledge faculty members showing extraordinary promise at the beginning of their academic careers (see section A.4. of the SCHEV Guidelines document for more details).

VCU continues to be on the rise among research universities across the nation.  Our rapid progress is thanks, in large part, to the talent and dedication of my faculty colleagues who have excelled in teaching and research and who have distinguished themselves in scholarship and service every day.  More than twenty VCU faculty members have been recognized by SCHEV in recent years for their outstanding teaching, scholarship and service.

In continuing that tradition, please join me in nominating a deserving faculty colleague this year.  It is important that nominations be prepared according to the guidelines that SCHEV has posted.  Each submission must include statement of support excerpts from the dean and department chair, and it is important that the nominee’s accomplishments clearly reflect the mission of the university, which can be found here.

A wealth of information is available on the SCHEV website for assistance in putting together the nomination packages.  Please review the instructions and criteria for the awards program found on SCHEV’s website, particularly Boyer’s Principles of Scholarship.

Please complete the Nomination Cover Sheet, found here, which must be submitted with the nomination package.  DO NOT USE the Signature Page that is included on the last page of the SCHEV Nomination Guidelines.  Be aware of the requirements to include a professional head shot and short biography with the nomination package.  Also, the page limit for the nomination package for this year has been changed to 11 pages (from 19 pages).

Please pay particular attention to the formatting requirements for the entire nomination package, which include:

Nomination submissions must be prepared using: (i) standard 8.5×11-in. page size; (ii) standard one-inch margins; (iii) at least single spacing; (iv) size 11 font; and (v) Arial font style.  All nominations must be submitted as MS Word documents.  PDFs will not be accepted.

For assistance in compiling your nomination packets, please contact Senior Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs, Dr. Gypsy Denzine.  Nominations are due to the appropriate dean no later than Monday, July 13.  After review and approval, the deans should forward one electronic MS Word document (PDFs will not be accepted) of each nomination packet to Jenn Arce in the Provost’s Office (jmarce@vcu.edu) no later than Monday, July 27.

VCU’s faculty members are an essential part of transforming students’ lives and ensuring their success.  Thank you for taking the time to nominate your colleagues for SCHEV’s Outstanding Faculty Awards program.

Best wishes.
