Commemorating Hispanic History Month
Virginia Commonwealth University is commemorating Hispanic Heritage Month with a number of events.
Celebrated from September 15 – October 15 nationally, Hispanic Heritage Month honors the histories, cultures and contributions of the Latinx people in the United States. Hispanic and Latinx Americans make up the second-largest ethnic group in the country, accounting for 52 million people or nearly 17% of the national population.
VCU’s events formally began on Friday, September 15 with a Latinx kick-off event sponsored by the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs.
But events leading up to the month have been plentiful, including two VCU Health Facebook Live sessions from The Valentine discussing the ways VCU Health serves the Latinx community and exploring the exhibit, “Nuestras Historias: Latinos in Richmond” in English and Spanish.
And on Tuesday, September 12, Pulitzer Prize-winning author Junot Díaz gave a public reading at VCU. Diaz, a Dominican-American, is the author of three books and also a recipient of MacArthur “Genius” Fellowship, in addition to the PEN/Malamud Award, Dayton Literary Peace Prize, Guggenheim Fellowship and PEN/O.
This year’s month-long celebration at VCU includes events focusing on diverse topics as career preparation, religion, education, pop culture and entertainment, athletics, disability and more.
