This week, as VCU celebrates the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. we also honor something that makes our university community distinctive and beautiful.

We are proudly the most diverse university in the commonwealth in all of the ways in which people are diverse and we are committed to becoming one of the most diverse universities in the nation.

We, like Dr. King, have also committed ourselves to serving our fellow human beings. Last year, our students contributed more than 1 million hours of service to the Richmond community through programs like ASPiRE and the Division of Community Engagement. Our research and creative enterprise is translational and transformative — moving from the laboratory and studio into the marketplace and clinic to help people as quickly as possible.

And like Dr. King, the people who comprise the VCU community proudly embrace one another as colleagues, and we strive to treat everyone we meet with the professionalism and dignity that they deserve. We do more than accept one another — we learn from one another and help each other succeed in every way we can.

Dr. King dedicated his life to advancing this mission. And I am grateful that I can count on the entire VCU community to embrace these ideals as we redefine what a great American research university can be — one that’s dedicated to embracing all people and giving every person the chance to succeed.

Help us continue the work of Dr. King this week by putting service into action. Visit the MLK Day website to learn more about events and programs running through Monday.
