President’s Posts

Michael Rao, Ph.D.

Congratulations to our colleagues at the VCU Medical Center for receiving the nation’s top honor for leadership and innovation in safety and quality improvement.

The American Hospital Association–McKesson Quest for Quality Prize® recognizes our team for its sustainable and widely adopted approach to achieve the Institute of Medicine’s six quality aims for safe, effective, efficient, timely, patient-centered and equitable health care.

This highly competitive award is a testament to the collaborative efforts of an extremely dedicated, hard-working and talented team of health professionals and the leadership and support of MCV Hospitals CEO John Duval and VCU Health System CEO and Senior Vice President for VCU Health Sciences Sheldon Retchin.

The AHA selection committee noted that VCU Medical Center physicians and staff in every area focus on high reliability practices and exhibit a relentless dedication to helping ensure that patients, staff and visitors remain safe. Their efforts resulted in a 50 percent reduction in serious safety hospital events, an electronic early warning system that alerts caregivers in real time of a patient’s declining health status and a community clinic that has enhanced care management and care coordination for the sickest, poorest patients.

The Quest for Quality Prize is evidence of our commitment to ensuring that every patient at the VCU Medical Center will receive world-class medical care that is safe and of the highest quality.
