Joseph T. DiPiro, Pharm.D., has been appointed Virginia Commonwealth University’s associate vice president for health sciences, faculty affairs. He will continue in his role as dean of VCU School of Pharmacy.

He succeeds Dr. David C. Sarrett, former dean of VCU’s School of Dentistry, who served in the role for ten years.

“I am grateful to Dean DiPiro for taking on this important work that supports our extraordinary faculty,” said Art Kellermann, M.D., senior vice president, VCU Health Sciences, and CEO of VCU Health System. “With DiPiro’s long record of accomplishment in health care and education, I have great confidence that he will maintain the tradition of excellence at VCU’s health sciences schools.”

DiPiro earned his B.S. in pharmacy from the University of Connecticut and his Pharm.D. from the University of Kentucky. He was appointed dean of VCU School of Pharmacy in 2014 after serving as executive dean at South Carolina College of Pharmacy and assistant dean for pharmacy programs at Medical College of Georgia School of Medicine. His textbook “Pharmacotherapy: A Pathophysiologic Approach” is used in most U.S. pharmacy schools.

“It is an honor to receive this appointment,” DiPiro said. “I look forward to supporting the work of our health sciences faculty, who do incredible work in classrooms and research laboratories. Their work fuels VCU’s mission of advancing health care and providing a world-class health education.”

Kellermann said, “I also wish to relay my gratitude to David Sarrett, D.M.D., for his tenure in the role of AVP. Dr. Sarrett’s work has helped us get where we are today.”

The duties of the AVP for faculty affairs include:

  • Review and oversight of faculty promotion and tenure review in the five health sciences schools reporting to the Senior Vice President
  • Review of faculty promotion and tenure documents
  • Review and approval of requests for change of tenure review and/or change of appointment type
  • Review of recommendations for endowed chairs and professorships
  • Review and approve health sciences faculty emeriti appointments and distinguished career faculty appointments
  • Support faculty affairs administrator in health sciences schools
  • Promote recruitment and retention processes for DEI goals
