SOP employees celebrate 285 years’ worth of service to VCU
Each year, Virginia Commonwealth University recognizes university and VCU Health System faculty and staff – those celebrating five-year anniversaries – with a service awards ceremony. This year, VCU School of Pharmacy faculty and staff are being recognized for having served a total of 285 years at the university.
The 43rd annual Service Awards Ceremony and Reception will take place 3-5 p.m. Sept. 23 at the Siegel Center, 1200 W. Broad St.
Sharing honors for the highest number of years served at the School of Pharmacy — with three decades each — are Tom Karnes, professor of pharmaceutics, and Craig Kirkwood, professor of pharmacotherapy and outcomes science.
Both Karnes and Kirkwood have been with the school since their 1984 arrival at VCU. To put the year in perspective, Apple unveiled its revolutionary new Macintosh personal computer in ’84, President Ronald Reagan entered his second term with a landslide over Walter Mondale, and the “Cosby Show” premiered on NBC.
Karnes had just earned his Ph.D. in pharmaceutical sciences at the University of Florida. Kirkwood, having earned his Pharm.D. at the University of Buffalo in 1981, had just completed a residency in drug information practice at the University of North Carolina’s North Carolina Memorial Hospital. Both have held various academic appointments throughout the years within the university and/or the VCU Health System.
