Dixon named chair of pharmacotherapy department
Dave Dixon, Pharm.D., has been named chair of VCU School of Pharmacy’s Department of Pharmacotherapy and Outcomes Science.
Dixon, an associate professor at the school who has led VCU’s Center for Pharmacy Practice Innovation since 2016, was named interim chair following the departure from VCU of longtime chair Donald Brophy earlier this year. Dixon’s role becomes permanent effective Nov. 1.
A widely published and nationally recognized expert on medications and issues related to cardiology and diabetes, Dixon is a fellow with the American Heart Association, the American College of Cardiology, the American College of Clinical Pharmacy and the National Lipid Association. He is affiliate faculty at the Pauley Heart Center and the Cardiology Division of VCU School of Medicine’s Department of Internal Medicine.
“It is an honor to officially step into this role as chair,” Dixon said. “The department has a well-earned reputation for research, teaching excellence and collegiality. I am proud to have the opportunity to lead it.”
Joseph T. DiPiro, dean and McCalley chair of the School of Pharmacy and VCU associate vice president for health sciences, faculty affairs, noted Dixon’s track record as a researcher and faculty member.
“Dave is a tremendous, valued colleague and an important voice in the profession,” DiPiro said. “He was the right choice for this position.”
Dixon received the school’s 2021 Excellence in Service Award and in 2020 was named outstanding reviewer by the Journal of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy.
Among other duties, Dixon has published over 100 peer-reviewed publications and is an associate editor of the Journal of the American Pharmacists Association and Journal of Clinical Lipidology; president of the Accreditation Council for Clinical Lipidology; past president of the Southeast Lipid Association; and past chair of the Cardiology PRN for the American College of Clinical Pharmacy.
