Nine students awarded Dissertation Assistantships
Nine VCU School of Pharmacy doctoral students have received VCU Graduate School Dissertation Assistantships that will cover a total of more than $223,000 in stipends and tuition fees. By department, the 2016-17 recipients are Kavita Iyer, Samuel Obeng and Urjita Shah, Medicinal Chemistry; Mandana Azimi, Sneha Dhapare, Hebing Liu and Neha Maharao, Pharmaceutics; and Yoshita Paliwal and Julie Patterson, Pharmacotherapy and Outcomes Science.
“The fact that we have a total of nine Ph.D. candidates who won this prestigious award is a credit to our excellent students, outstanding faculty and dedicated support staff within each department and schoolwide,” said Aron Lichtman, associate dean for research and graduate studies.
“The applicant pool was very large and competitive. The school is very proud of the awardees and all our students in their dissertation year who applied.”
VCU Graduate School created the assistantship award program for doctoral scholars who have completed all program requirements, including didactic courses, except for the dissertation. They must be nominated by their program directors and must be planning to work full-time toward completion of their dissertations during the award period.
The assistantships offer $8,625 per semester – fall 2016 and spring 2017 – or $17,250 for the entire school year. Students who are selected also are credited for tuition.
Graduate program directors for the School of Pharmacy are Yan Zhang, Medicinal Chemistry; Masahiro Sakagami, Pharmaceutics; and Patty Slattum, Pharmacotherapy and Outcomes Science.
