Tyler Stevens offered Jessica McDaniel congratulations on “her well-deserved recognition.”

Jessica McDaniel, a third-year Pharm.D. student, was named the VCU School of Pharmacy’s  2014 National Community Pharmacists Association Outstanding Student Member of the Year.

The award was presented to McDaniel in May by assistant professor Tyler Stevens, faculty liaison for the Student Association of Community Pharmacists, the student chapter of NCPA.

In a letter to McDaniel, Lisa Schwartz, NCPA’s senior director for management affairs, wrote, “The leadership of your student chapter nominated you for this distinction. Please know that peer recognition is one of the greatest compliments anyone can receive. … As you know, pharmacists who practice in independent community pharmacies are a vital link in our health care system.

“Now more than ever, community pharmacists have a profound impact on their patients’ health by increasing access to services such as health screenings, chronic disease management, medication reconciliation, adherence programs, immunization, home infusion, counseling and, of course, prescription drugs.”

McDaniel’s nomination noted her work with SACP, including having served as community service chairwoman and restructuring the chapter’s community service events. She redesigned the education boards and screening pamphlets for SACP’s hypertension and diabetic education/screening programs and identified new contact supervisors.

In addition, she demonstrated leadership in helming the chapter’s participation in the Fill the Pill 5K for the Susan G. Komen Foundation, resulting in a $1,000-plus donation made in honor of the late Amy W. Rudenko, associate professor and community pharmacist.

McDaniel also was nominated for the SOP’s 2014 Student Pharmacist Professionalism Excellence Awards (P3).

“The club would not have been as successful this year if it had not been for her help, organization and creativity,” said Bri Hughes, 2013-14 SACP president. “Jessica was an extraordinary executive member this year and very deserving of the award.”

Matt Murray, Pharm.D. class of 2016, will serve as 2014-15 SACP president, and Hughes will be the chapter’s P4 representative.

NCPA was founded in 1898 to represent independent pharmacy and its needs, to foster continued involvement in politics and community and to provide direction for community pharmacy in business and practice.
