Jewell and Carl Emswiller Interprofessional Symposium debuts March 9
Today’s rapidly changing health care environment dictates that closer attention be paid to the need for interprofessional practice. VCU’s first Jewell and Carl Emswiller Interprofessional Symposium will address that need and how to make it a reality.
“Preparing for the Interprofessional Practice Environment of Tomorrow” features keynote speaker Carolyn Clancy, director of the federal Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. The one-day event, designed for health-care providers, faculty and students, will take place 7 a.m.-4:45 p.m. March 9 at Greater Richmond Convention Center, 403 N. Third St.
In a recent column on the AHRQ Web site, Clancy discussed how interprofessionalism – or more simply put, teamwork – can better health care. “When teams work together, everyone can do their best job,” she wrote. “Today, this approach is catching on in health care in a big way.
“Doctors, nurses and other staff have always depended on each other to provide high quality care to patients. Now they’re learning how to apply specific teamwork principles to produce better and safer care. “
Emswiller symposium lectures and discussion will expand on how and why the need for interprofessional practice is on the rise; how to use new approaches to increase interprofessional collaboration and education for improved patient care; and how to apply lessons from innovative programs that are already in place.
Panelists include Valentina Brashers, University of Virginia; Tracy Causey, Capital Area Health Network; Charles “Bud” Conklin, Carilion Clinic Dental Care; Joanne Disch, University of Minnesota School of Nursing; Paula Graling. Inova Fairfax Hospital; John Luther, Dentaquest; Thomas Menighan, American Pharmacists Association; and Alan Dow, Gary Matzke, Sheldon Retchin and Victor Yanchick of Virginia Commonwealth University.

The symposium was endowed by Jewell Emswiller in honor of her late husband Carl and their shared passion for collaborative, patient-centered pharmacy practice. Emswiller, a 1962 alumnus of the MCV School of Pharmacy, was a leader and innovator in community pharmacy practice. His legacy lives on.
