Lana Sargent, Ph.D., RN, FNP-C, GNP-BC, assistant professor at the VCU School of Nursing, and a team of VCU faculty and staff were selected to receive a $50,000 grant supported by the VCU Presidential Research Quest Fund (PeRQ) and funds from the VCU School of Nursing. The project, titled “Detection of Dementia in Ethnic/Racial Minority Older Adults Living in Community Settings,” will study approaches to identify memory concerns and dementia in minority older adults living in community-based settings. The purpose of this study is to begin to establish memory screening tools that are socially sensitive and modified to minority older adults’ needs.

The team includes Sally Russell, M.S., data manager at the School of Nursing; Sarah K. Lageman, Ph.D., ABPP-CN (co-investigator) associate professor at the School of Medicine and neuropsychologist at the VCU Parkinson’s and Movement Disorders Center; and Leroy R. Thacker, Ph.D. (co-investigator/biostatistician) associate professor at the School of Medicine.
