Dean Nancy Langston Named NLN Academy of Nursing Education Fellow
Nancy Langston, Ph.D., RN, FAAN, dean of the VCU School of Nursing, is one of 32 distinguished nurse educators nationwide selected as an Academy of Nursing Education Fellow by the National League for Nursing. She will be inducted as a fellow at the 2012 NLN Education Summit this fall in Anaheim, California.
The NLN established the Academy of Nursing Education to foster excellence in nursing education by recognizing and capitalizing on the wisdom of outstanding nurse educators. Fellows support the mission and core values of the NLN, assist in the work required to prepare graduates from all types of nursing programs, and serve as resources for new educators and those in clinical practice who hope to someday enter the ranks of nurse faculty.
This sixth class of fellows, the largest since the academy was established in 2007, was selected through a competitive application process among an applicant pool that was much larger than in years past. Applicants were selected based on contributions to innovative teaching and/or learning strategies; nursing education research; faculty development activities; academic leadership; promotion of public policy that advances nursing education; and/or collaborative educational, practice, or community partnerships.
“We are proud to recognize the vision, talent, wisdom, and experience of the 2012 fellows, whose accomplishments will be aptly and publicly reflected by their ANEF credential,” said NLN CEO Beverly Malone, Ph.D., RN, FAAN. “I look forward to formally welcoming them into the academy’s ranks at the induction ceremony in Anaheim this fall and to working with them in the years ahead to prepare the next generation of nurses to advance the nation’s health.”
Langston has served as professor and dean of the VCU School of Nursing since 1991. Under her visionary leadership, the VCU School of Nursing has become one of the top 25 nursing schools nationwide based on research funding from the National Institutes of Health, has been ranked by U.S. News and World Report in the top 10% of nursing graduate schools nationwide and has served as a stellar model for community outreach to improve health care among underserved and vulnerable populations.
Langston’s commitment to service extends beyond the School of Nursing. She has a lengthy record of involvement in local civic organizations, such as the Richmond Fan Free Clinic Board of Directors and on the disaster management planning committee of the Richmond Chapter of the American Red Cross. In addition, Langston has an extensive history of involvement in professional nursing organizations at local, state, regional and national levels. At the national level, she served on numerous committees of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing and served as president of the National League for Nursing. She is currently the chair of the board of trustees of the National League for Nursing Foundation. The recipient of numerous awards, including the 2011 Nancy Vance Award from the Virginia Nurses Association, the 2007 Richard B. Caspari Award from the Richmond Chapter of the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses and the 2004 Outstanding Leadership Award from the National League for Nursing, Langston was inducted as a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing in 2001.
Langston holds a bachelor’s degree in nursing from the University of Arkansas, a master’s degree in nursing from Emory University and a doctorate in education from Georgia State University, with a focus on administration in higher education.
