Lana Sargent, M.S.N., RN, FNP-C, GNP-BC, assistant professor in the Department of Adult Health and Nursing Systems, is part of a team that won a Community Engagement grant for a Community Health and Wellness Program for older adults. Members of the team include Dominion Resident Service Coordinator Greg Ford, Pamela Parsons Ph.D., RN, GNP-BC (PI ) of the School of Medicine, Patricia W. Slattum, Pharm D, Ph.D. of the School of Pharmacy, Melanie Bean, Ph.D., of the School of Medicine, and Pam Kovacs, Ph.D., of the School of Social Work. The collaboration with Dominion Place provides an ongoing venue for service learning in an interdisciplinary model for professional students at VCU and benefits residents. Dominion Place has committed to the concept of a Health and Wellness Program and now welcomes the expertise of professional faculty and students to assist with developing this model. Students will have the opportunity to experience what it means for older adults to “age in place” and will have an increased understanding of culture and factors that influence health disparities within the context of the living environment. Dominion Place residents will have increased and ongoing health support in place, where trust can be developed over time and where faculty and students can advocate for residents’ health care needs to improve health outcomes.
