VCU School of Nursing alumna Deborah Raines, Ed.S., RN, ANEF (Ph.D. ’92/N), associate professor at the University at Buffalo, was recently awarded the NLN Isabel Hampton Robb Award for Outstanding Leadership in Clinical Practice at the 2016 National League for Nursing Awards ceremony.

In addition to teaching, Raines serves as a research consultant at Sisters of Charity Hospital in Buffalo, and she has collaborated on evidence-based quality improvement projects that provide outstanding educational experiences for nursing students. Her research focuses on parenting behaviors, pregnancy and newborn health, and nursing workforce development through innovative education. Raines’ interests include curriculum design, educational technology, and retention and student success.

The NLN Awards are given to individuals and institutions that contribute to the NLN’s mission to promote excellence in nursing education to build a strong and diverse nursing workforce to advance the health of the nation and the global community. The recipient also inspires passion for clinical nursing, challenges students to expand their clinical knowledge base in new ways and conducts scholarly research to assess learning outcomes that improve patient care.
