Senior Connections, The Capital Area Agency on Aging (CAAA) recently presented the Mary Creath Payne Leadership award to Pam Parsons, RN, GNP-BC (M.S.’83/N; Ph.D. ’04/N), director of practice and community engagement and the Judith B. Collins and Joseph M. Teefey Distinguished Professor at the VCU School of Nursing. The award honors an outstanding local leader who has made an exceptional contribution in the area of aging.

In addition to teaching and maintaining a clinical practice focused on complex care of the older adult, Parsons is project director for the Richmond Health and Wellness Program, a community-based, interprofessional care coordination program focused on improving the health of indigent, older adults.

Parsons’ research focuses on implementation and evaluation of models of care targeting chronically ill older adults and vulnerable populations.

The award honors one of CAAA’s founding executive directors, Mrs. Mary Creath Payne, who passed away on March 1, 2016. Recipients have extensive service in the field of aging and display great leadership skills. The recipient must also be a true trailblazer or agent of change, address issues that improve quality of life for seniors and caregivers, and be informally recognized by their peers and people they serve.
