Alison Montpetit and Christi Adams Present Research at AACN National Teaching Institute
Alison Montpetit, Ph.D., RN, assistant professor in the Department of Adult Health and Nursing Systems, co-presented a research session, titled “Exhaled Biomarkers and Pulmonary Status in Patients with Rib Fractures: A Feasibility Study and Lessons Learned,” at the recent National Teaching Institute of the American Association of Critical Care Nurses in Denver, CO. Alumna Christi Adams, RN, CCRN (B.S.’88/N; M.S.’06/N), nurse manager at the VCU Medical Center Emergency Department, was the co-presenter.
The session described various strategies used by the academic and clinical practice interdisciplinary teams to ensure the success of a pilot study funded by an AACN – Philips Clinical Outcomes grant. The teams examined the relationships between exhaled biomarkers (i.e., exhaled nitric oxide [eNO] and volumetric capnography to monitor carbon dioxide production [VCO2]) and pulmonary status in patients with rib fractures. The goal of this research is to develop evidence for the clinical management of patients with rib fractures, specifically the prediction of pulmonary complications such as respiratory failure and pneumonia.
