St. Philip School of Nursing story to air on WCVE-TV’s Virginia Currents
Last fall the VCU School of Nursing approached Virginia Currents, a locally produced program on The Community Idea Stations, Richmond’s public television station, about doing a story on the the legacy of the St. Philip School of Nursing. We’ve just gotten word that the piece, in two parts, will be included in episodes of Virginia Currents airing on WCVE-TV on February 10th and 17th at 8 p.m.
Part 1, airing on 2/10 at 8pm, is about how rigorous the training was at St. Philip but how valuable that was to their careers, how attention to detail as a nurse was so important back then, how the friendships at the school were so strong, and how nurses today face different challenges than nurses of the 1960’s.
Part 2, airing on 2/17 at 8pm, is about being an African American nursing student & nurse in the 1960’s and how they were treated by their white counterparts.
Three of our St. Philip alumni — Virginia Roane, Arlethia Rogers and Vivian Bagby — were interviewed for this piece on the St. Philip School of Nursing, which was the Medical College of Virginia’s school for African American nursing students during the era of racial segregation. The St. Philip School of Nursing operated from 1920 to 1962, when the last of its 688 graduates received their nursing diplomas.
