Cindy Munro, RN, FAAN (PhD ’92/N, NP ’97), a former longtime professor in the Department of Adult Health and Nursing Systems, has been recognized as a Fellow by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) for her research in oral health and the prevention of disease.

AAAS is an international, non-profit organization dedicated to advancing science around the world and members are annually nominated for election as Fellows by groups of three previously elected AAAS Fellows. The criteria for this distinction includes making significant contributions to the advancement of science or its applications, a continuous membership with AAAS for four years leading up to nomination, and contributions in the areas of teaching, research, technology, administration in academe or other service areas.

An internationally recognized leader in oral health and immunity, Munro was recognized for her distinguished contributions to improving outcomes in critical illness, through research and as editor of the American Journal of Critical Care. She is currently a professor of nursing and associate dean for research and innovation at the University of South Florida College of Nursing. 

During her time at VCU, Munro was one of four inaugural Nursing Alumni Endowed Professors and served as director of the Biobehavioral Measurement Core of the school’s Center of Excellence in Biobehavioral Approaches to Symptom Management. She is the recipient of numerous awards, including the MCV Alumni Association of VCU’s 2009 Outstanding Nurse Alumnus Award. She was also selected as one of 120 Visionary Leaders by the VCU School of Nursing in the spring of 2013.

Munro received her B.S.N. from Millersville University of Pennsylvania and her M.S.N. from the University of Delaware. She obtained a Ph.D. from the VCU School of Nursing and a Ph.D. in microbiology and immunology from the School of Basic Health Sciences, now known as the VCU School of Medicine.
