Each year National Nurses Week, May 6-12, recognizes nurses for their dedication to quality patient care and health care equity. The week expanded in recent years to the entire month of May to celebrate nurses’ contributions to improving health care for everyone.

At the VCU School of Nursing and across the world, nurses have shown resiliency, courage and innovation in the midst of the pandemic. From the bedside to the classroom, they have gone above and beyond to deliver care to patients, educate the next generation of nurses and discover breakthroughs in care delivery.  I appreciate all of the sacrifices they make to transform health care.

Next week our school will celebrate graduation for new and current nurses. I commend them for this milestone and their commitment to being part of nursing, the nation’s most trusted profession for the 20th consecutive year, according to a Gallop poll.

It’s an exciting time to witness how nurses are making a significant difference as part of the health care team. I am so proud to be a nurse and hope that you will join me in thanking them and acknowledging the important work nurses do each day.
