Langston Center hosts annual symposium on wellbeing of health care practitioners
The Langston Center for Quality, Safety and Innovation hosted its annual symposium on Oct. 13, focusing on the topic “Developing a System that Promotes the Wellbeing of Health Care Practitioners.” The audience included an interprofessional mix of more than 60 practitioners, students and faculty. Nancy Langston, Ph.D., the retired dean of the School of Nursing for whom the Center is named, was also in attendance.
The symposium featured a panel discussion and four Technology, Entertainment and Design (TED) talks presented by Curtis Sessler, M.D. FCCP, FCCM, professor of internal medicine with VCU School of Medicine; Alistair Hewison, Ph.D., RN, senior lecturer at the School of Nursing at University of Birmingham, UK; Margaret Plews-Ogan, M.D., FACP, associate professor of clinical internal medicine with University of Virginia School of Medicine; and Joanne Disch, Ph.D., RN, FAAN, faculty ad honorem with University of Minnesota School of Nursing.
Marsha Rappley, M.D., vice president of health sciences at VCU and CEO of VCU Health System, discussed the importance of the wellbeing of the health care practitioner in order to achieve high quality care. Rappley reiterated this point as she unveiled that this topic is part of her new strategic plan and mission.
