The VCU and UVA Schools of Nursing hosted the Southern Nursing Research Society 2016 Annual Conference Feb. 24-27 at the Colonial Williamsburg Lodge in Williamsburg, Virginia. Three faculty honored during the SNRS awards luncheon include: Kyungh An, Ph.D., RN, D. Jean Woods Nursing Scholarship; Suzanne Ameringer, Ph.D., RN, Mid-Career Researcher Award; and Patricia Kinser, Ph.D., RN (B.S.’03/N; M.S.’04/N; Cert.’04/N), STTI/SNRS Research Society Grant. The following faculty and students conducted poster and podium presentations to showcase the outstanding research and scholarship underway at our school:

Kyungeh An, Ph.D., RN, associate professor, presented a poster “Can Body Mass Index Substitute Cholesterol Level for CVD Risks Estimation inField Studies? Reliability and Impact of Obesity.”

Kyungeh An, Ph.D., RN, associate professor, Nancy Jallo, Ph.D., RNC, FNP-BC, WHNP-BC, CNS, associate professor, Suzanne Ameringer, Ph.D., RN, associate professor, and Alison Montpetit, Ph.D., RN, assistant professor, had a symposium presentation “Noninvasive Exhaled and Salivary Biomarker Research: A Bright Tomorrow.”

Genevieve Beaird, M.S., RNC-OB, clinical instructor, presented a poster “A History of Nurse-Physician Bedside Rounds: 1873-1971.”

Mary Lynn Davis-Ajami, Ph.D., M.B.A., RN, MS, FNP-C, RN, assistant professor, presented a poster “Depressive Symptoms and Body Mass Index Among a National Sample of U.S. Adults with Diabetes: The Mediating Role of Sedentary Behavior.”

Candace C. Johnson, Ph.D., M.P.H., RN, assistant professor, presented a poster “A Proposed Model of Chronic Stress in African-American Women: Using Interdisciplinary Theories from the Biological and Social Sciences to Explain Cardio-metabolic Health Disparities.”

Patricia Kinser, Ph.D., RN, WHNP-BC, assistant professor, and Jo Lynn Robins, Ph.D., RN, ANP-BC, CHTP, AHN-C, associate professor, had a symposium presentation “Epigenetics and Biobehavioral Research: A Focus on DNA Methylation.”

Carley Lovell, M.S., M.A., RN, WHNP-BC, clinical assistant professor, presented a poster “Associations of Maternal and Paternal Problem Drinking with Binge Eating and Binge Drinking Behaviors among College Youth.”

Alison Montpetit, Ph.D., RN, assistant professor, presented a poster “Strategies to Expand a Mid-Career Nursing Program of Research: Application of the TOPP Model.”

Tracye Proffitt, M.S.., RN, ACNS-BS, CNE, CCRN, clinical instructor, presented a poster “Anticipatory advocacy: A conceptual model.”  Co-authors: Jeanne Salyer, Ph.D., RN, FNAP and Victoria Menzies, Ph.D., RN, PMHCNS-BC.

Jo Lynn Robins, Ph.D., RN, ANP-BC, CHTP, AHN-C, associate professor, presented a poster “Cumulative Risks and Allostatic Load in Underserved African American Adolescents.”

Lana Sargent, M.S., RN, FNP-C, GNP-BC, assistant professor, presented a poster “Cognitive Frailty: An Innovative Area of Nursing Research.”

Christina Wilson, RN, WHNP-BC, Ph.D. student, presented a poster “Body Image Sexuality and Sexual Dysfunction as Predictors of Physical and Psychological Sequelae in Women with Gynecologic Cancer.”
