Two VCU School of Nursing professors were awarded the VCU Medallion for Endowed Faculty Honors during an investiture ceremony Oct. 19 in the student lounge. Marianne Baernholdt, Ph.D., M.P.H., RN, FAAN, was recognized as the Nursing Alumni Endowed Distinguished Professor, and Pamela Parsons, Ph.D., RN, GNP-BC, was recognized as the Judith B. Collins and Joseph M. Teefey Distinguished Professor.

Marsha Rappley, M.D., vice president of health sciences and CEO of VCU Health, presented the medallions.

“Endowed professorships are an affirmation of your work, your values and your mission,” Rappley said. “These professorships will take you through the future in your research areas of rural health and aging adults.”

Baernholdt is director of the school’s Langston Center for Quality, Safety and Innovation. She is an internationally renowned expert on quality and safety in rural health care, which is the focus of her research. The recipient of numerous awards, Baernholdt has published and presented nationally and internationally. She serves on the American Academy of Nursing’s expert panel on quality health care and is the U.S. representative on the International Council of Nurses’ Steering Committee for rural and remote nursing network.

Parsons is director of practice and community engagement at the VCU School of Nursing. She is also project director of the Richmond Health and Wellness Program – a nurse-led interprofessional collaborative practice for low-income seniors. In addition to various publications, Parsons has focused her research and has presented extensively nationwide on models of care targeting chronically ill older adults and vulnerable populations in the community. She has served on an urban institute policy roundtable focused on housing services and older adults and has been a content expert for the American Nurses Credentialing Center Adult-Gerontological Certification Exam.

The Nursing Alumni Endowed Professorship was established by alumni of the MCV, St. Philip and VCU schools of nursing as part of the celebration of the school’s centennial. This award serves to recruit or retain highly acclaimed nursing scholars who have made significant contributions to the mission of the VCU School of Nursing and are highly visible and personally involved in activities that directly benefit the alumni.

The Judith B. Collins and Joseph M. Teefey Distinguished Professorship was established through a leadership commitment by family, friends, and grateful colleagues to honor Judith Collins for her distinguished career, lifelong commitment to women’s health and leadership on the faculty of the VCU School of Nursing. The professorship also honors her husband Joseph M. Teefey for his professional and personal commitment to health care. The Judith B. Collins and Joseph M. Teefey professorship in nursing continues their legacy by supporting extraordinary work in the mission to educate nurses clinically and academically with a focus on teaching, service and research. View more photos on the School of Nursing Facebook page.
