Hyekyun Rhee, Ph.D., RN, PNP, associate professor of Nursing and Pediatrics at the University of Rochester School of Nursing, recently visited the VCU School of Nursing to discuss her research on improving asthma outcomes in adolescents.

A guest speaker of the school’s Center for Biobehavioral Clinical Research, Rhee presented on the topic “Asthma Self-Management in 21st Century Adolescents: Methodological Approaches.”

Rhee launched multiple research projects targeting asthma, the leading chronic condition among adolescents. Noting that her patients tend to underreport their asthma symptoms and not communicate openly with their parents and caregivers, Rhee created a program for the iPod to track the patient’s coughing, the primary symptom of asthma, and activity levels. This patented device is known as the Automated Device for Asthma Monitoring, or ADAM.

Rhee also developed a texting system to interact with asthmatic teens and is beta testing a new mobile phone app for asthmatic patients. Rhee’s research has repeatedly shown that adolescents can be educated, active participants in their health care with the help of innovative technology.RheeZoom-360-pxh
