A VCU School of nursing senior was honored with the top student award at this year’s March of Dimes Virginia Chapter’s Nurse of the Year Awards Gala held recently at the Richmond Omni.

Shannon Storey, a native of Herndon, Va., was named Rising Star/ Nursing Student of the Year. This is the second consecutive year that a VCU nursing student has won the Rising Star award.

Winners were selected across 17 categories ranging from oncology to pediatrics. More than 74 finalists emerged, all representing the March of Dimes vision for a healthier, stronger generation of babies and families.

Storey is the senior class director and has been selected for the Division of Student Affairs’ Emerging Leaders Program every year since she was a freshman. She completed a summer externship in the VCU Medical Center’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit this past summer and hopes to pursue graduate studies to become a pediatric nurse practitioner in VCU’s nursing master’s program.

In addition to Storey, other March of Dimes honorees affiliated with the VCU School of Nursing include:

• Valarie Castle (B.S. ’07), an alumna who currently works at Bon Secours St. Mary’s Hospital – Cardiology, Med Surg and Critical Care Award.
• Kathleen Martin Bell, RN (B.S. ’07, M.S. ’11), an adjunct faculty member who works as a clinical nurse in Labor and Delivery at VCU Health System – Women’s Health Award.
• Judith A. Lewis, Ph.D., RNC, FAAN, professor emerita – Lifetime Achievement Award.

The Nurse of the Year Awards is a statewide event that recognizes exceptional nurses, creates awareness of professional excellence and promotes the future of the nursing profession, while helping to advance the mission of the March of Dimes. Nurses are an integral part of the March of Dimes mission for stronger, healthier babies.
