Angela Starkweather, Assistant Professor and Coordinator of the Adult Primary and Acute Care Nurse Practitioner Programs at Virginia Commonwealth University School of Nursing volunteered her time to provide health assessments for the boys basketball team at Thomas Jefferson High School. “This is a great opportunity to interact with young athletes and help them identify ways that they can actively protect themselves and improve their health habits,” stated Dr. Starkweather. Besides performing the health assessments, Dr. Starkweather provided education on health maintenance activities such as oral care, nutrition, and safety, and the importance of lifestyle choices. “Nurse practitioners play a critical role in improving the health of our nation. This was just one small but significant opportunity for me be a part of that goal.” Dr. Starkweather was assisted by Allison, the coach’s wife and an RN at Virginia Commonwealth University Health Systems.
