Post-Graduate Study Abroad Opportunities for 2018-2019

VCU’s National Scholarship Office (NSO) would like to announce five upcoming scholarship opportunities. With some exceptions, these are open to current juniors who will graduate by August 2018, seniors who will graduate in 2017, and recent alumni who graduated in 2016.

  • The Gates Cambridge Scholarship is a full-cost scholarship to the University of Cambridge funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Candidates apply independently to their preferred graduate program no later than October 15 and indicate that they want to be considered for the Gates Cambridge Scholarship. If they are admitted to their graduate program, then they are considered for the scholarship. One hundred Gates Cambridge Scholarships are awarded annually–forty to US citizens and sixty to citizens of countries other than the US or UK.   • The Marshall Scholarship was created as an enduring gesture of thanks for assistance received by the British people from the U.S. in the aftermath of W.W.II. This scholarship is open to undergraduates who will complete the bachelors degree by August 2017 and alumni and graduate students who completed their bachelors degree in 2015 or 2016. Students attend a U.K. university for 2-3 years. Marshall applicants must be U.S. citizens and should have an undergraduate GPA of at least 3.7. Candidates can come from any field of study and must be nominated by their current university. This award covers a personal allowance for cost of living, an arrival allowance, tuition, fees, books, daily expenses, approved travel, thesis preparation and fares to and from the U.S. To learn more visit the Marshall Scholarship website (http://www.marshallscholarship.org/).
  • The Mitchell Scholarship was created as an enduring gesture of thanks for the role former Senator George Mitchell played in the peace process in Northern Ireland. This scholarship is open to undergraduates who will complete their bachelors degree by August 2017 and graduate students and young alumni who are not yet 30 years old. Scholars complete a one year masters degree at any university in Ireland. Mitchell Scholarship applicants can be from any field of study, must be U.S. citizens, and should have an undergraduate GPA of at least 3.7. Candidates must be nominated by their current university.   • The Rhodes Scholarship seeks exceptional young men and women with strong leadership potential from any field of study. Candidates must be under the age of 25 on October 1 of the year they apply and have to be nominated by their current university. Rhodes Scholars attend Oxford University with peers from around the globe. Rhodes Scholarship applicants must be U.S. citizens (or citizens of another former British colony) and should have an undergraduate GPA of at least a 3.7.   • The Schwarzman Scholarship seeks to identify the next generation of leaders and develop in them a deep understanding of China’s culture, people, economy, and governance model. Successful candidates will pursue a one-year graduate degree in one of three disciplines: public policy, economics and business, or international relations. Tsinghua University in Beijing–one of China’s most prestigious universities–will be the host institution. Schwarzman Scholars will come from the US, China, and around the globe. They will live and study together at Schwarzman College, in facilities that have been constructed specifically to house the Schwarzman Scholars. The first class of one hundred Schwarzman Scholars was selected in 2015 and will start in the summer of 2016. Eventually, two hundred Schwarzman Scholars will be selected annually. Candidates for the Schwarzman Scholarship should be at or near the top of their class academically and have demonstrated significant leadership skills and potential. Candidates must have completed their undergraduate degree in any field of study no later than May 2017 and be between the ages of 18 and 27 on June 30, 2017. All of these opportunities will require extraordinary academic preparation and leadership experiences. All scholarship selection committees look for an open mind capable of thinking about the most challenging issues facing our world from various perspectives.
