Interested in getting off the beaten path next summer? The National Scholarship Office will be holding an information session about the Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) program on Thurs., Oct. 3, at 12:30 PM at The Honors College (701 W. Grace St) in room 1303.  For more information on CLS visit http://clscholarship.org.

The CLS program is part of the National Security Language Initiative (NSLI), a U.S. government interagency effort to expand the number of Americans studying and mastering critical need foreign languages.

CLS provides full summer (eight to ten weeks) funding for different critical languages. All CLS programs are held in countries where the language is spoken and many involve home stays in addition to intensive classroom instruction.  Some programs offer only intermediate and advanced training and some are open only to graduate students and graduating seniors.

  • Arabic and Persian: Advanced beginning, intermediate and advanced levels
  • Azerbaijani, Bangla/Bengali, Hindi, Indonesian, Korean, Punjabi, Turkish and Urdu: Beginning, intermediate and advanced levels
  • Chinese, Japanese and Russian: Intermediate and advanced levels

If you are unable to attend the session, but are interested in CLS, please email us at honorsnsotar@vcu.edu.
