Greetings VCU Faculty,
Winter break is quickly approaching and with that comes alot of end of semester business to attend. We have compiled some information to keep in mind as you wrap up your semester. If you have any questions, email lsrequest@vcu.edu.
Canvas Login Portal is Changing
The Canvas Login Portal page will soon have a new updated appearance. Users now have a more streamlined way of logging into their Canvas account.
The new Canvas login portal will become available on December 12th on the Learning Systems website by clicking on the Canvas tab. It will then become the default login portal starting on the afternoon of December 21st. We do not anticipate any downtime or impacts to customers as a result of this transition, beyond orientation to the new page layout.
Just-In-Time Support
In need of support to complete your end-of-semester checklist? We’re here to help. For an overview of available support resources for Canvas and Kaltura, check out the “Help & Resources” tab located on the Learning Systems website.
Final Grades
Final grades are due by noon on December 21, 2022 via Faculty eServices, not Canvas. For more information visit the Faculty Grade Entry page.
Carrying Over Incompletes to the Next Semester
If you have students who will be finishing the course this semester with an ‘incomplete’, there are specific steps the instructor needs to take before the term concludes on January 6, 2023, at which point, you will only be able to access the course in Read-Only mode.
For step by step instructions, visit the Incompletes within Canvas page or watch this video.
Canvas Quick Tips
Are you new to Canvas, or are you looking for minor improvements that you can make for Spring 2023? We have a few ideas for you:
- Canvas features that will take your course to the next level (and save you time!):
- Canvas Calendar: did you know that assignments added to Canvas with due dates are automatically added to the Canvas calendar? This helps to ensure that students are able to keep track of all their course assignments in one place, and they can even add the Canvas calendar to their personal calendar if they choose to subscribe.
- Canvas Student View: we have all received the dreaded “I can’t see the assignment posted in Canvas on my end” email. Canvas Student View allows instructors to do a quick check and see what is available to students in real time.
- Integrating Tools in Canvas: do you use a third party tool, like Top Hat or Voicethread, in your course? If so, integrating the tool in your course can help to save you time by: automating assignment grading, having all tools available in one place, and other functionality (this typically differs from tool to tool). The Learning Systems team has integrated a number of tools for you to use in Canvas already.

Pedagogical Assistance
VCU Online has put together a series of courses designed to help faculty enhance the online teaching experience for themselves and students.
Between their Excellence in Online Learning Program and Online Learning Specialization Program, you are sure to become well versed in online teaching.
These courses are available as open enrollment and, once registered, participants have roughly 45 to 60 days to finish. Timely feedback and best practices are provided throughout by the VCU Online team.
Additionally, Learning Systems and VCU Online have put together a series of asynchronous courses called the Surviving In Canvas Mini-Courses. These courses are self-paced and should not take more than an hour to get through each course and 10 days from enrollment to complete.
