Strengthening and advancing diversity, equity and inclusion at Virginia Commonwealth University

Virginia Commonwealth University is committed to its mission to educate, to innovate, and to provide world-class healthcare and treatment to all who come to us. We remain steadfast in our quest to discover life-saving treatments, especially as it relates to COVID-19, a pandemic that threatens all of us.

As our healthcare teams work together to advance novel and transformative treatments, the rest of us should keep in mind that education will continue to be the universal panacea for this particular disease, as well as the best-known cure for stigmas associated with its purported origin and spread.

During this time, like any other, we must advocate for the just treatment of all people. We must overcome acts of bias and racism against community members and caregivers and patients of Asian descent. We must overcome stereotypes that label this disease as only afflicting older generations and resist scapegoating its spread to younger generations. And we must remain committed to ensuring the most vulnerable among us receive the same deference and support as those with the greatest access and means.

Indeed, we must be united in defeating this disease that knows no border in terms of age, gender, race and ethnicity, and socioeconomic status. We must come together across our differences to become a difference-maker for the sake of us all. Simply put, there can be no alternative.
