Winter Weather Preparation
A winter storm is expected to impact the Richmond area beginning Saturday, January 24, 2026, and continue into early next week. We will provide residential-specific information as it becomes available. While we continue to monitor the situation, you should expect that services will be limited (less food locations open, time periods with power outages, Cary Street Gym and the Student Commons may be closed, etc.). If you are planning to travel home prior to the storm, please be aware of any information around the timing of the storm, as current guidance shows travel on Sunday will be nearly impossible.
Please monitor alert.vcu.edu for the latest information on university operations and any building closures.
We recommend taking the following steps to prepare for potential winter weather:
1. Prepare for Potential Power Outages
Winter weather may cause outages in the area. Residence halls are equipped with generators that power life‑safety systems (such as exit signs and emergency lights). Please note that heating will be affected during extended outages.
- Charge Devices: Ensure cell phones, laptops, and external battery packs are fully charged.
- Stock Up: Have non-perishable food, bottled water (1 gallon per person per day), and necessary medications on hand.
- Light Sources: Have flashlights and fresh batteries ready. Candles are prohibited!
- Stay Warm: Have extra blankets and warm clothing accessible. Keep all bedroom and apartment windows closed to help maintain heat and keep your space comfortable.
If the power is out for an extended period, RLH staff will post important updates near your residence hall information desk.
2. Protect Your Space (Vital for Pipe Safety)
To prevent frozen pipes and water damage, please take the following steps during extreme cold:
- Keep the Heat On: Even if you plan to be away, do not turn your thermostat off. Set it to at least 60°F (15°C) to keep pipes warm.
- Open Cabinet Doors: Open kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors under sinks to allow warm air to circulate around the plumbing.
- Drip Faucets: Allow one faucet to drip slowly with lukewarm water.
3. Note Important Safety Warnings
Never use a stove, oven, or outdoor grill to heat your indoor space. This creates a severe fire hazard and poses a risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.
- Elevators: If the power flickers, avoid using the elevators. Use the stairs if possible.
- Fridge/Freezer: Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed as much as possible. Food will stay cold for about 4 hours in a fridge and 48 hours in a full freezer if unopened.
- Unplug: If the power goes out, unplug sensitive electronics to avoid damage from a surge when power comes back on.
4. Report Facility Concerns in Residence Halls
- For emergency maintenance issues during the storm, call:
- (804) 828‑9444
- GRC residents: (804) 828‑2226
- For non‑emergency concerns, submit a work order:
- All halls except GRC: https://fss.vcu.edu/
- GRC residents: mycommunity.americancampus.com
5. Prioritize Personal Safety
During snowy and icy conditions:
- Stay indoors when possible
- Plan ahead for meals and supplies
- Use caution in all travel
6. Plan for Service Changes
- Dining Services: For current updates on open locations and adjusted hours, visit vcu.campusdish.com or follow VCU Dining on social media.
- Mail Services: Mailrooms will be closed Sunday and Monday, Jan. 25-26, due to the storm. The plan is to resume normal hours on Tuesday, Jan. 27, weather permitting and pending university operations.
Our goal is to support a safe and prepared community as we move through this winter storm together.
