Irfan Ahmed, Ph.D., elevated to Fellow of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences (AAFS)
Irfan Ahmed, Ph.D., associate professor and a leading researcher in digital forensics within VCU Engineering’s Department of Computer Science, has been elevated to Fellow of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences (AAFS). This distinction recognizes Ahmed’s significant and sustained contributions to the field of digital forensics, particularly in the area of industrial control systems.
“I am grateful to the AAFS for recognizing and acknowledging my work on digital forensics,” said Ahmed. “Considering the evolving landscape of computing infrastructure, digital forensics requires consistent research efforts to solve emerging research problems in this field.”
Ahmed’s research focuses on developing advanced capabilities to investigate digital evidence within industrial control systems, which are critical to the security of our nation’s infrastructure. With direct implications for national security and the protection of critical infrastructure, such as nuclear power plants and power grids, the importance of Ahmed’s research cannot be understated.
This is not the first time Ahmed’s research has been recognized by the AAFS, receiving their Outstanding Research Award in 2014.
The AAFS Fellow is a highly selective honor bestowed upon members who have demonstrated exceptional accomplishments in their forensic science careers. Selection criteria include significant contributions through research publications, presentations and training, as well as service to the AAFS and the broader digital forensics field.
It is through Ahmed’s continued dedication and significant contributions to the advancement of digital forensics and national security that this award is bestowed.
