Twenty-seven students attended to present their work with four winning awards, three for best presentations and one for best paper.

Students from the VCU College of Engineering received multiple awards at the American Nuclear Society (ANS) conference this past April.

Furkan Erdogan, a graduate student pursuing a masters in mechanical and nuclear engineering with Jessika Rojas Ph.D., mechanical and nuclear engineering associate professor, won best graduate presentation in radiation protection and medical physics. Peggy Cawley, a mechanical and nuclear engineering doctoral student of Supathorn Phongikaroon, Ph.D., mechanical and nuclear engineering foundation professor, won the award for best graduate presentation in nuclear fuels and materials.

The last two awards were given to Ryan McGuire and Sierra Tutwiler, both undergraduate students of Lane Carasik, Ph.D., mechanical and nuclear engineering assistant professor. Ryan won best undergraduate presentation in the thermal hydraulics track, with Sierra bringing home the award for best paper.

Rojas, Phongikaroon, and Carasik have all been instrumental in amplifying and supporting the research done by these students.

“VCU’s mechanical and nuclear engineering program continues to thrive and grow due to the hard work of our students and faculty,” said John Speich, Ph.D., acting chair of the Department of Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering. “The recognition received from the ANS awards exemplifies our dedication to provide students with exceptional education and research opportunities. We are excited to see what the future holds for our students and look forward to their continued contributions to the nuclear engineering field.”
