Dean's blog

Lyndon F. Cooper | School of Dentistry

Last Friday, I had the pleasure of hosting the Dean’s Advisory Board luncheon.

Former deans, faculty and students traveled various distances, taking time from their practices to show their commitment to VCU School of Dentistry. I was excited to share my first six months’ experiences and impressions of the School, and I highlighted the ongoing activities in our preclinical, clinical, post-doctoral, research and service environments.

I also had the opportunity to listen to each member’s thoughts and concerns regarding the School, and they were strongly positive. My impression was that their experiences – as students during the ‘60s, ‘70s and ‘80s – inspired them to be great clinicians and active alumni. Of course, they had many questions. But, as they reflected on their past, the overwhelming majority shared stories about a particular faculty member or classmate who had a positive effect on their life as a dental student.

Looking forward, the reflections that were shared provide motivation to encourage and maintain that wonderful culture that has allowed our graduates to prosper. Enjoying lunch with these highly successful alumni provided me with a glimpse of our past, a mirror to view the present and a window to envision our future. They shared in educating each other, helped to form Virginia’s dental community, and they all contributed in many ways to building our great School.

As I walked through our building this week, I wondered who among us will be serving on the Dean’s Advisory Board in 10, 20 or even 50 years. My hope is that it will be many of us.
