Research is an integral part of who we are
In today’s edition of the Richmond Times-Dispatch, Dr. Anthony Faber’s research efforts to understand and combat the pathophysiology of cancer is on prominent display on the front page. It reminds me that research is a central part of our professional commitment that is often overshadowed by the equally important but more visible teaching and delivery of patient care within our School of Dentistry.
Research questions our accomplishments, explores existing gaps in knowledge and creates new knowledge. Dr. Faber’s fundamental research required several years to address a well-defined question, in this case, related to how signals in cells may lead to cancer. It is hard work and this activity is essential to our goal of improving oral health. And while we can’t fill a tooth or brighten someone’s smile with it, it has contributed to a body of knowledge that may lead to the better management or even cure of a deadly pediatric cancer.
Research is an integral part of who we are at VCU School of Dentistry. Today’s news article highlights just one of many important studies ongoing in our Philips Institute of Oral Health Research and is part of the School of Dentistry’s growing reputation of excellence. Well done!
