The events leading up to Election 2020 mean different things to different people, but one thing is certain: your voice is critical to our democracy.

If you have not already done so, be sure to exercise your right to vote. Because we are remaining open for patient care on Tuesday, Nov. 3, plan the trip to your polling location carefully and allow yourself enough time. The polls open at 6 a.m. and close at 7 p.m.

For the clinical staff and faculty who will be at work, we have asked supervisors to be flexible so that all employees have the opportunity to vote. To help guide you through the process, VCU developed an Active Citizenship Toolkit, which I encourage you to utilize.

As VCU President Michael Rao said recently, there is no denying the stress and contention many may feel during local, state, and presidential elections this year. And unsettled feelings may extend past tomorrow as there is a good chance we will not know the results on Tuesday.

As a team, we have recently been through a lot together. We have focused on staying safe and well while continuing our focus on academics, research, patient care, financial challenges, and our progress. In addition, we have focused on learning about our differences and respecting one another.

Regardless of the election outcomes, it is critical that we remain focused on our mission of the School of Dentistry:

— Education of highly qualified dental professionals.

— Research that advances the understanding of oral health, disease and effective treatment.

— Service to the community.

— Improved oral and general health of our patients and the general population.

Focusing on this core mission – as a team – requires that we all play a part in maintaining our civility toward one another and respecting our differences. No matter the outcomes of Election Day 2020, I expect us all to conduct ourselves ethically, professionally, and respectfully.

As the elections take place and the polls close, I urge you to treat your teammates as you would like to be treated.

Be kind. It’s really that simple. United in kindness toward one another.
