Lyndon F. Cooper | School of Dentistry

With each passing day, we learn more about the experiences of our African American students and colleagues at the hands of law enforcement, the criminal justice system, and, yes, even within the VCU School of Dentistry.

Both in and out of the dental school many are met with disrespect, prejudice, and injustice — particularly our racial minority and black students.

A private memorial for George Floyd begins at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 9, in Houston, Texas. At that moment, we can champion and support one of our University’s core values – inclusivity; as well as advocate for equal protection under the law for African Americans and an end to police violence against black citizens.

The emphasis on the mattering of black lives and systemic injustice does not mean that other lives matter less. It simply recognizes and respects the dignity and humanity in each of us. A dignity and humanity that for communities and people of color, are often forgotten.

But let us now, forever remember.

Wherever you may be at that moment tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. EST, please pause for a moment of silence — not only in support of lives lost because of senseless hate, but in solidarity, declaring equality and justice
