New outpatient clinic approved
With August comes students, orientations, classes and active hallways here at the VCU School of Dentistry. On behalf of the entire school, a hearty “Welcome!” to new students and residents, and a warm “Welcome Back!” to the familiar faces of future dental health care providers.
Breaking News – New Outpatient Clinic in the Works
If you’ve seen the latest edition of The Dental Fill-In, it will come as no surprise that there’s excitement brewing here on campus. We’ve been given an opportunity to capitalize on a once in a century opportunity to build a patient care facility that is integrated with the primary and specialty care systems of VCU Health.
Thanks to the support and vision of Dr. Marsha Rappley, VP for Health Sciences, and a host of interprofessional leaders here on the MCV Campus, we’re on the forefront of a growing national trend to share knowledge, resources and facilities to improve patient outcomes.
In the not too distant future, a diabetic patient, for example, can receive his medical and dental care in one location. In one visit.
Stay tuned for more announcements about groundbreaking, construction and progress on this first-of-its-kind facility in the country.
Until then, take a look at the renderings of our new building, which will house entire floors dedicated to dental clinics for students, residents and faculty practices and much more.

Edmund G. Brodie Research Professorship
Please join me in congratulating Iain Morgan, Ph.D., director of the Philips Institute for Oral Health Research. Dr. Morgan was appointed to the Edmund G. Brodie Research Professorship in July. In the words of VCU President, Michael Rao, Ph.D., in his congratulatory letter to Dr. Morgan, “In awarding you this endowed professorship, your professional peers and your colleagues at VCU are pleased to recognize your exemplary contributions to teaching, research and public service. You are an integral part of our vision to make a difference as a major research university. I am grateful for your commitment to improving the lives of people throughout the world.”

Department Chair Certification
I had the pleasure of being a part of the Department Chair Certification Program of The Grace E. Harris Leadership Institute in July where I shared information about the role of chairs as academic leaders. It was an honor to participate. (Apparently, I did a good job!)

Opioid Epidemic
Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the university’s work to reverse the opioid epidemic, which has been declared a public health emergency in Virginia. In a series produced by VCU Public Affairs, Omar Abubaker, D.M.D., Ph.D., professor and S. Elmer Bear Chair, oral and maxillofacial surgery, shares a family tragedy in hopes of educating others.
Dr. Abubaker earned a graduate certificate in international addiction studies in May 2016 and was a keynote speaker at the Dental Schools Addiction Education Summit in Washington, D.C., last month.
