Lyndon F. Cooper | School of Dentistry

I am very pleased to announce administrative changes to advance the mission of the School of Dentistry. Dr. Michael Healy has been appointed Senior Associate Dean for Student Services & Institutional Effectiveness. He will serve as the chief administrator for all student affairs including student organizations and student government activities and ensure that all students are effectively served and supported at all stages of their experience. Dr. Healy will lead the development of international student programs and relationships. Dr. Healy will also oversee the Director of Admissions and the Director of Student Recruitment. In his role related to institutional effectiveness, he will lead planning and assessment processes to include tracking and evaluating progress on the school and university strategic plan implementation. This includes developing a comprehensive outcomes assessment process and collection of assessment data for all academic, research, service, and clinical missions. These are vital to maintain program accreditations and ensure the school meets its university responsibilities. Dr, Healy’s office will be located in the dean’s office on the fourth floor of the Lyons Building.

Dr. Riki Gottlieb has been appointed Director of Admission and will be responsible for leading the DDS admissions processes including the IDP. This includes directing preadmissions courses and IDP preparatory program and counseling prospective students. As a priority, she will promote the admission of students from diverse backgrounds and interest, including students interested in rural and community service careers, and research and academic careers. Dr. Gottlieb’s office will be located in the Admissions Office on the third floor of the Lyons Building.

Dr. Susie Goolsby has been appointed Director of Student Recruitment and will be responsible for leading our student recruitment for the DDS program which includes recruitment of in-state, out-of-state students to obtain a highly competitive applicant pool from diverse backgrounds and diverse interest. She will also provide leadership and support for the school and university career pipeline programs. Dr. Goolsby’s office will be located in the Admissions Office on the third floor of the Lyons Building. Drs. Goolsby and Gottlieb will both continue to have teaching roles in the Department of General Practice.

These three new appointments were designed to support the goals of the VCU Quest for Distinction and the School of Dentistry’s new strategic plan (still in draft form).

Brief Biographies on Drs. Healy, Gottlieb and Goolsby:

Dr. Michael Healy graduated with a Bachelors of Science degree in Biology from the SUNY at Oneonta, NY. He later attended Adelphi University, NY to conduct microbiology research. He completed his DDS degree at New York University in 1985. He practiced general dentistry in Blairstown, NJ prior to joining the Department of General Practice at VCU in 1999. He later earned a M.Ed. degree in Educational Leadership at Virginia Commonwealth University in 2004. That same year, he joined the School of Dentistry’s administration as the Assistant Dean for Admissions. Currently he is serving as Associate Dean for Admissions and International Affairs.

Dr. Riki Gottlieb received her B.Med.Sc.and her DMD from The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel. Following graduation she practiced general dentistry in a private practice in Jerusalem and later on earned an Advanced Education in General Dentistry certificate at Virginia Commonwealth University. Dr. Gottlieb was a faculty member at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine prior to joining the faculty at VCU School of Dentistry in 2005. She currently serves as Director of the International Dentist Program and Director of the Virtual Reality Simulation Laboratory. Dr. Gottlieb maintains a private practice in General Dentistry at the School of Dentistry and is a Fellow of the Academy of General Dentistry and the International College of Dentists. She was promoted to Associate Professor in 2013.

Dr. Susie Goolsby, Assistant Professor, Department of General Dentistry, received her DDS from VCU in 1993 and earned an Advanced Education in General Dentistry certificate from Howard University in 1994. She completed a Master of Science in Health Administration at VCU in 2013. Dr. Goolsby’s experience includes sixteen years in Community Health and Private Practice as a General Dentist in New Orleans and Thibodaux, Dr. Goolsby made a midcareer change to academics in 2009 when she joined the VCU School of Dentistry faculty. She has served as the course director for Cariology since 2010 and as a VCU Dental School representative to the Global Collaborative for Caries Management in London in June of 2013, where the framework for a global standard of care in caries management began development.
