The VCU Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery program successfully completed its latest five-year accreditation site visit review last week. I met with the two site visitors and they reported that we can expect no recommendations (translated to mean a perfect score) in their report to the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA). The site visitors noted the quality of the faculty, residents and staff, and on the overall good teamwork they saw. Another area of strength they noted was the integration with the MCV Hospital and other residency programs. Congratulations to the department are in order! I want to thank everyone, particularly Dr. Rob Strauss, program director for a great site visit. “This visit took an extraordinary effort on the part of many people. I would like to take a moment to thank Janet Wooten and Terry Williams, who did the lion’s share of gathering the volumes of data needed and also Susan and Tarsha in the clinic for obtaining all the patient data in the clinic” wrote Dr. Strauss. The final approval on the program’s accreditation will be on the agenda for CODA this summer after which we would expect full-accreditation approval notification.

Dr. Omar Abubaker, department chair, should also be recognized for leading an outstanding team and making VCU OMFS nationally and internationally recognized.
