Tyler Wagner holding an award, standing next to Teresa Salgado

Tyler Wagner, a Ph.D. candidate studying health outcomes and pharmacoeconomics under CPPI Director Teresa Salgado, won the 2022 Pre-Doctoral Fellowship in Pharmaceutical Sciences from the American Foundation for Pharmaceutical Education, a $10,000 grant that will fund his current research on differences in patient outcomes between those with pharmacists on their primary care teams and those without. This is the third fellowship he has received from AFPE, having won the 2021 Pre-Doctoral Fellowship in Health Outcome Disparities last year and another AFPE fellowship before joining VCU.

“I’m thankful to AFPE, especially Ellen Woods, the President of AFPE, for their continued support of my research during my time at the VCU School of Pharmacy,” Wagner said. “I’m excited that they see value in the research that I have been conducting with Dr. Salgado and I look forward to sharing the deliverables of our work in the coming year.”

AFPE’s Pre-Doctoral Fellowship in Pharmaceutical Sciences is designed to positively impact patient and public health by supporting high performing students who possess the skill and aptitude to become outstanding scientists and leaders in the pharmaceutical industry, academia and the government/nonprofit sectors. AFPE awarded 19 pre-doctoral fellowships this year.

AFPE’s mission is to advance and support pharmaceutical sciences education at U.S. schools and colleges of pharmacy by awarding fellowships and grants, recognizing and supporting talented students and faculty, encouraging exceptional students to pursue advanced degrees in pharmaceutical sciences, educating outstanding industry-ready pharmaceutical scientists, supporting pharmaceutical science faculty, and supporting state-of-the-sciences pharmaceutical education.

The Center for Pharmacy Practice Innovation at the VCU School of Pharmacy helps pharmacists optimize patient outcomes by being a leader in transforming ambulatory and community pharmacy practice and advancing pharmacists’ roles on patient-centered, collaborative care teams.
