The Wright Center for Clinical and Translational Research, in partnership with VCU Health, proudly celebrates the continued success of the Clinical Research Coordinator (CRC) Internship Program. This immersive, service-learning experience is designed to introduce students from the VCU College of Health Professions to real-world clinical research practices and career pathways in the field.

This spring, Brianna Rich and Charity Adusei successfully completed their internship experience, marking a significant milestone as graduating seniors in the Health Services Bachelor of Science program. Under the expert guidance of Dr. Shelly Orr, Director of Clinical Research Operations at VCU Health, the internship culminated in a final poster presentation delivered to peers and community partners.

A key component of the program’s success is its focus on mentorship. Both Brianna and Charity were mentored by Keila Najera, VCU Health Clinical Research Coordinator II, whose leadership and support gave the students valuable insight into the daily work of clinical research professionals. Their internship included hands-on experience with participant screening, data collection and verification, and understanding the regulatory requirements across nephrology, nursing, and hepatology studies.

In recognition of her exceptional performance and enthusiasm, Brianna Rich received the student award for her cohort. Her experience in the internship has sparked a lasting interest in clinical research, and she has already applied for entry-level CRC positions as she begins her post-graduation journey.

The Wright Center and VCU Health are always looking to grow this impactful program. Experienced CRCs who are interested in mentoring future clinical research professionals are encouraged to get involved. If you would like to serve as a mentor for an upcoming intern, please contact Shelly Orr at [email protected].

Congratulations again to Brianna and Charity, and thank you to Keila Najera for her outstanding mentorship. Programs like the CRC Internship are instrumental in developing the next generation of clinical research professionals, and we’re proud to support their success.
