Gary Zhu (B.S. ‘06), a Virginia Commonwealth University graduate who has built a global reputation in investment strategy and portfolio management, will return to his alma mater this winter to address the graduating class of the School of Business.

Zhu, a senior vice president and deputy chief investment officer at AllianceBernstein, oversees the performance and strategy for the firm’s insurance platform. Since joining the global asset management company in 2020, Zhu has spearheaded initiatives in multi-sector income portfolio strategies, earning his team the “Investment Team of the Year” title from Insurance Asset Risk in both 2022 and 2023.

His journey began at VCU, where he graduated summa cum laude in 2006 with a degree in finance and economics. After earning an Executive MBA from Columbia Business School, Zhu held leadership roles at Wells Fargo Securities and Genworth Financial.

During the financial crisis, he managed multi-billion-dollar portfolios at Genworth and was later recognized as a top cross-asset strategist by Institutional Investor.

Zhu’s current role extends beyond traditional investment management. As part of AllianceBernstein’s U.S. Investment Grade Credit and Sustainable Thematic Credit teams, he is shaping strategies that address growing interest in sustainable finance.

“We are honored to welcome Gary for the Class of 2024’s commencement ceremony,” said Interim Dean Brian Brown, Ph.D. “He’s an exceptional member of our alumni community and has truly demonstrated a commitment to the School of Business. His connection to our school makes him an ideal speaker to inspire our graduates as they pursue new opportunities and prepare to take on their own challenges.”

The VCU Business 2024 winter commencement will take place on Sunday, Dec. 15, at the Greater Richmond Convention Center. Doors open at 1:00 p.m., and the ceremony begins at 2:00 p.m.
