Ed Grier is leaving his post as dean of the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Business effective July 1 to become dean of the Leavey School of Business at Santa Clara University in California.

Grier joined VCU in 2010 bringing extensive experience in international operations, union negotiations, brand management, administration, finance and planning, marketing, audits, capital projects and government relations that he acquired during his 29 years at the Walt Disney Co.

“This is a great opportunity for Ed to return to California, and his new appointment is indicative of the stellar quality of our leadership and the recognition of VCU on a national stage,” said VCU President Michael Rao, Ph.D.

Under Grier’s leadership, the VCU School of Business launched its EPIC strategic plan to build on strengths, ensure continued innovation and impact, and ignite a collaborative energy among students, faculty, staff, alumni and the business community in Richmond and beyond. He also oversaw creation of the International Consulting Program, the launch of the Master of Decision Analytics Professional Track degree program and the school’s online M.B.A.

The VCU Brandcenter and the Center for Sport Leadership became part of the School of Business during Grier’s tenure.

“Ed has been a truly transformational dean for the School of Business and senior leader for VCU as a whole,” said Gail Hackett, Ph.D., provost and senior vice president for academic affairs. “His legacy of growth and major accomplishments for the school are exemplary, as is the strong team of faculty and staff in the VCU School of Business that is poised to continue the school’s upward trajectory moving forward.”

Hackett will appoint an interim dean in the coming weeks and a formal search for a new dean will be launched later this year.
