Morgan Matthews - Undergraduate Recruitment and Enrollment

By Megan Nash

From a young age, Morgan Matthews was drawn to the performing arts, dreaming of one day treading the boards of the theater. Little did she know, her journey would lead her to VCU Business, where she now stars as an undergraduate recruitment and enrollment counselor. With a dedication to student success, Morgan helps students navigate their academic paths while always looking for ways to amp up their college experience. Let’s go behind the scenes – curtains up!

Let’s get started!

Where can we find you on the VCU map?
You can find me at the VCU School of Business (Snead Hall) 1st floor in the Student Success suite (B1100/1102).

Can you share a bit about your educational journey? Where did you go to school, and what was your major?
I graduated from Ohio University in 2018 with a B.B.A. in Marketing and from Louisiana State University (LSU) in 2022 with an M.A. in Higher Education Administration.

Could you describe a current project you’re working on? What excites you most about it?
A current project that I am working on is better engaging the Summer Scholars in their transition into the School of Business. For the first time, we are having them have lunch with our dean and some student support staff to help kick off their first summer on campus. I am excited for them to build these relationships and start networking with the passionate people we have in Snead Hall!

How do you stay updated on industry trends or changes in your field, and how does that knowledge benefit your role at the university?
I have subscriptions to “State Council of Higher Education for Virginia” and “Today in College Admissions.” They send me articles a couple of times per week, but once a month I sit down to actually read all of them. I also try to attend webinars that are relevant to recruitment and student engagement to help me better understand the students that we work with on a daily basis.

If you weren’t working in your current role, what alternative career path could you see yourself pursuing?
If I was not working in higher education, I would want to be on Broadway. I went to a performing arts school as a child and LOVE the arts. I want to get back into community theater one day, but for now, I will enjoy my season pass for the Altria shows!

What’s the most unusual or interesting item on your desk or in your office that tells a story about you?
I have a small jar of mustard seeds on my desk in my office. It is a visual representation of one of my favorite Bible verses that talks about faith.

What never fails to make you smile?
It always makes me smile when the “why” for one of my students finally clicks. After they have that realization, they generally seem happier, more engaged and more willing to take advantage of what campus and the college experience has to offer!
