I write to share that Mary Beth Taormina will soon retire from VCU after an amazing 42 years of service. As many of you know, Mary Beth started her career at VCU in 1977 as a Radiation Safety Technician and worked her way up to Radiation Safety Officer and interim-Director of Environmental Health and Safety. She has been responsible for the safe use of radioactive material and radiation producing devices throughout the university and the hospital.

In that time, she received all three of her degrees from VCU, including a bachelor’s degree in Radiation Sciences and a master’s degree in Biomedical Engineering. She notes that she’s lived most of her life in Sanger Hall – right across from the morgue! Mary Beth also served on VCU’s Radiation Safety Committee for nearly 30 years and was active in the Health Physics Society, a national organization of professionals who specialize in radiation safety.

Mary Beth plans to spend retired life traveling Europe. I wish Mary Beth a healthy, happy and fulfilling retirement and in thank her for her commitment to VCU’s important mission.

Please join me in acknowledging and celebrating 42 years of service to VCU and VCU Health.
